This Saturday Morning Feature takes you back to the golden age of hip-hop cinema with Rappin’ (1985), a vibrant and upbeat story of redemption, rhythm, and community — starring Mario Van Peebles in one of his earliest leading roles.
Directed by Joel Silberg (Breakin’), Rappin’ follows John “Rappin’” Hood (Van Peebles), a streetwise hero just released from prison who returns to his old neighborhood, only to find it threatened by gentrification and local corruption. Determined to defend his block and inspire his people, Hood uses his rhymes, rhythm, and raw charisma to rally the community — proving that words can be just as powerful as fists.
Packed with electric performances, street dance sequences, and a killer early hip-hop soundtrack, Rappin’ stands as one of the first films to bring rap culture to mainstream audiences. The film captures the heart of 1980s urban America — a time when rap was rebellion, rhythm, and resilience.
⸻
🏆 Cast & Crew
• Mario Van Peebles as John Hood
• Tasia Valenza as Dixie
• Charles Bartlett as Duane
• Eriq La Salle as Joey
• Kadeem Hardison as Allan
• Directed by: Joel Silberg (Breakin’)
• Produced by: Cannon Films
⸻
🎤 About Mario Van Peebles
The son of trailblazing filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles, Mario followed in his father’s revolutionary footsteps — becoming a respected actor and director known for works like New Jack City (1991) and Posse (1993). Rappin’ marked his breakout performance, solidifying his place as one of the early faces of hip-hop cinema.
⸻
💬 Plot Themes
Rappin’ fuses music and activism — echoing the tone of the streets and the spirit of social justice. The film touches on loyalty, the fight against displacement, and the unifying power of self-expression through art.

Episodes in order:
Hopalong Casualty (1960): The coyote thinks he got the Road Runner by the neck but it turns out to be just a cloud in the shape of his neck. In the first minute of this film, the Coyote is smashed by a telephone pole, run over by a truck and blown up by his own dynamite.

Scrambled Aches (1957): The Coyote chases the Roadrunner -- unsuccessful in catching him on every attempt.
Stop! Look! and Hasten! (1954): The Coyote employs a series of devices to try to capture the Road Runner.
Hip Hip-Hurry! (1958): The coyote consumes some high-speed tonic to catch up with the Road Runner, but he can't seem to control it.
Hook, Line and Stinker (1958): The coyote traverse the entire spectrum of devilish Road Runner killing devices. Some are as simple as trying to hit the Runner with a frying pan or mallet to overly complex "this-hits-that" contraptions .
Wild About Hurry (1959): The Coyote is trying everything to catch the Road Runner including a giant slingshot, rock, roller skate and giant magnet.
Zip ’n Snort (1961): While chasing the Road Runner on the highway, The Coyote must first out-run a truck, and he does so by running off a cliff -- and splattering down a mountainside.
To Beep or Not to Beep (1963): When he finds a picture of baked Road Runner while skimming a book of "Western Cookery," the Coyote licks his chops and is determined to catch the bird.
Gee Whiz-z-z-z-z! (1956): Wile E. Coyote tries to get the Road Runner. He uses a bullet that can't outrace the Road Runner and a variety of other inventions including an Acme Batman outfit.
