Rappin’ (1985) | Mario Van Peebles Brings the Beat to the Streets Mix Flix 36 Views • 1 year ago

This Saturday Morning Feature takes you back to the golden age of hip-hop cinema with Rappin’ (1985), a vibrant and upbeat story of redemption, rhythm, and community — starring Mario Van Peebles in one of his earliest leading roles.

Directed by Joel Silberg (Breakin’), Rappin’ follows John “Rappin’” Hood (Van Peebles), a streetwise hero just released from prison who returns to his old neighborhood, only to find it threatened by gentrification and local corruption. Determined to defend his block and inspire his people, Hood uses his rhymes, rhythm, and raw charisma to rally the community — proving that words can be just as powerful as fists.

Packed with electric performances, street dance sequences, and a killer early hip-hop soundtrack, Rappin’ stands as one of the first films to bring rap culture to mainstream audiences. The film captures the heart of 1980s urban America — a time when rap was rebellion, rhythm, and resilience.

LYRICS:
I JUST POPPED THREE IN A ROW,
GASOLINIE WHAT I SMOKE,
GAS ON ‘E’ WE SLIDE THE DOOR,
SLIDE THE DOOR,
PLEASE DON’T TRY THIS SHIT AT HOME,

WE SEND SOULS UP TO THE SKY,
WHEN WE DON’T WANNA TALK IT THROUGH,
SEE US THEN WE TAKE YOUR LIFE,
WHAT THE FUCK YOU GONNA DO?

I GOT FIFTY RACKIES ON ME HANGIN OUT THE BACK OF MY PANTS AND I’M HANGIN OUT THE ROOF,
IMMA PUT THE BURNER ON HIS ASS,
MAKE HIM DANCE,
MICHAEL JACK,
BUST A MOVE,

IMMA SCORCH EVERY MOTHERFUCKER IN THE GAME CAUSE THERE’S NOTHIN LEFT TO DO,
PLUS I GOT THIS VEST ON MY BODY SO YOU KNOW I’M FEELING BULLETPROOF,

YUH, WE STAY LIT,
WE FUCK BITCHES,
POP ON PILLIES,
THAT IS IT.
HOLY MOLY, HOLY SHIT,
ME AND AND ALL MY PEOPLE HEAVEN SENT,

YUP,
SHE JUST GOT HER TITTIES TUCKED, MHMM,
YUP YUP, FILLIN UP A DOUBLE CUP WITH MUD,
MHMM,
YUH, MIX IT UP,
SAVE THAT MONEY, IF YOU DON’T GET ON YOUR STUCK,
WHAT THE FUCK,

I’M AT THE TOP OF MY GAME,
PERKYS BEEN KILLING MY PAIN,
I LIKE TO HIDE IN MY BRAIDS,
CHOPPER BEAM BLOW OFF YOUR BRAIN,
I GO INSANE, I GO INSANE, I GO INSANE,
LOOK AT MY FLAMETHROWER, I’M THROWIN FLAMES,

BITCH

FIFTY RACKIES ON ME HANGING OUT THE BACK OF MY PANTS WHILE I’M HANGIN OUT THE ROOF,
IMMA PUT THE BURNER ON HIS ASS,
MAKE HIM DANCE,
MICHAEL JACK,
BUST A MOVE, YEH

IMMA SCORCH EVERY MOTHERFUCKER IN THE GAME CAUSE THERE’S NOTHIN LEFT TO DO, YEH,
PLUS I GOT THIS VEST ON MY BODY SO YOU KNOW I’M FEELING BULLETPROOF,

WHY WASTE TIME WHEN YOU GET HIGH ON THE WEEKEND?
WHY WASTE WHEN YOU GET HIGH WHEN YOU CAN?
IMMA HIT YOU AGAIN,

I GOT FIFTY RACKIES HANGIN OUT OF THE BACK OF MY PANTS WHILE I’M HANGIN OUT THE ROOF,
IMMA PUT THE BURNER ON HIS ASS,
GET TO CHOPPING IF HE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO, YEH,

IMMA SCORCH EVERY OPPOSITION IN THE GAME CAUSE THERE’S NOTHING LEFT TO DO, YEH
PLUS I GOT THIS VEST ON ME MOTHERFUCKER,
BITCH I’M FEELING BULLETPROOF,

BITCH I’M BULLETPROOF.
