The Lyric League Series touched down in Lexington, Kentucky, and this stop was about more than just bars....

We linked with Devine Carama, who brought together some of Lexington’s hungry MCs and took us to the historic Lyric Theatre in the city’s East End to put Kentucky lyricism on full display.

The Lyric opened in 1948 and became an important cultural hub for Lexington’s Black community during segregation. It was also a stop on the historic Chitlin’ Circuit, the network of venues that gave Black entertainers places to perform and Black audiences places to safely experience live entertainment during the Jim Crow era. The Lyric welcomed legendary performers including Ray Charles, B.B. King, Count Basie, James Brown, Tina Turner and more.

Nearly eight decades later, The Punchline Academy pulled up outside that same historic building to continue the tradition of Black music and expression through a new generation of MCs.

With Devine Carama setting the lineup and an original beat produced by Da Inphamus Amadeuz, Lexington’s spittaz stepped up one by one with straight bars, punchlines and raw lyricism.

From the Chitlin’ Circuit to the Lyric League Series, the location made this one special.
